Trinidad and Tobago is a tiny twin republic isle obliquely opposite Venezuela. Our Twin Isle starts off the Caribbean Islands that are sprinkled around the Caribbean Sea.
Trinidad and Tobago like me is a virtual melting pot of peoples and culture. Black, White, Chinese, Indian, Spanish or French. Our lives have been beautifully enriched by all the many views.
For most of my life it didn’t matter what my ethnic heritage was made up of ( of which I have many influences), because no matter what I was a Trinidadian or a Trini as we affectionately call ourselves. And a Trini I am and will always be no matter what politician wants to say about Indo- Trinibagonian or Afro Trinibagonanian.
So on this day of 45 years of Independence I want us to focus on the beauty:
of our people– Of which we have had two Miss Universes and two Miss World. The beauty, the personality, the warmth.
of our music– we can still applaud ourselves for creating the only new instrument in the 21st century in the form of the steelpan. Calypso and Soca is just plain invigorating
of our sport– after a ten year delay we made it to the Football World Cup and our Soca Warriors made us proud!! We have a world record breaking cricket batsmen in Brian Lara
of our Carnival– it is the best!! Enough said!!
of our land– it is as beautiful and varied as it’s people.
of our food– sigh!! Doubles, roti, pelau (chicken and peas and rice) oildown, dumplings, and yes even chinese food taste different/better.
So yes I am biased because I am Trini, but then again I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Happy Independence Day Trinidad and Tobago.
